Causes
of the Civil War (from a Southern Point of View) is a link to some contemporary
essays that (as the name suggests) present the justification for the War (or
for secession) from the Southron perspective. The Confederate
Cause is a website that could use some sprucing up, from a graphical/organizational
point of view, but the information contained there provides a fairly accessible
and concise analysis of the Southron perspective on the Late Unpleasantness.
Mr. Scroggin's Quotes
page is a good start.
Washington and Lee University's
collection of Robert E. Lee's letters
and correspondence. Of particular interest is the Acton-Lee
correspondence, when General Lee reflects candidly on the causes of the
War and the intentions of the South.
The Southern
Avenger is a conservative commentator at The Charleston City Paper. He
has gained some notoriety and a large following with a series of well-written
and thoughtful videos, debunking and addressing many of the negative stereotypes
and prejudices that exist today vis-a-vis the South and Southroners. His video
on the Confederate
Flag is particularly worth watching.
The Descendants
of Point Lookout POW Organization has an amazing set of articles related
to atrocities
committed by Federal troops against Southroners; especially against women
and children, slaves, and Confederate prisoners of war. They use terms like
ethnic cleansing, extermination, and geonocide to describe these actions.
One might think this is a little over the top - until one reads some of the
articles! Be forewarned, it's not for the faint of heart.
Camp 1599 - Maj. Gen.
James Patton Anderson has reprinted an interesting newsletter entitled Confederate
Catechism (L. G.Tyler) that
addresses pertinent questions pertaining to the War.
Camp 1372 - Fighting
Joe Wheeler has a brief editorial defending the Southern Cross: Our
Flag by Mike Scruggs.
Here are some links
to Slave Narratives.
This are largely the product of a fascinating, WPA project in the 1930s, intended
to capture the recollections of still-living slaves. Many readers and listeners
will be surprised by many of these narratives, which do not comply to today's
widely-held caricatures of white-black relations in the Antebellum South.
A resource for information,
including genealogical information, on Florida's
Civil War history.
Here's a picture of
3rd Sgt. William J. Martin. Don't know anything about him, other than the
fact that he's the toughest-looking Reb I think I've ever laid eyes on!
